What you need before starting

How to remove keycaps without breaking them
Place the wire loops of the keycap puller on opposite sides of the keycap, as close to the switch as possible. Pull straight up with even pressure. Pulling at an angle or from one side bends the stem inside the keycap and can snap it on keys wider than one unit.
Larger keys like spacebar, enter, and shift use stabilizer bars underneath. Pull these caps more slowly and wiggle slightly side to side while pulling upward if the cap resists. Forcing a stabilized key straight up can crack the plastic posts that clip onto the stabilizer bar.
Remove all keycaps and place them in the container. Organizing them by row or section during removal wastes time because you photographed the layout already.
Washing the keycaps
Fill the container with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Water temperature should be comfortable to the touch, not hot. Hot water can warp ABS plastic keycaps, which deform at lower temperatures than PBT plastic.
Submerge the keycaps and agitate them with your hand for 30-60 seconds. Let them soak for 5-10 minutes if there is visible oil or grime, then agitate again.
Rinse each keycap under running water. Soap residue left behind creates a tacky surface when dry and attracts dust faster.
Lay keycaps out on a clean towel with the stem side up. This orientation lets water drain out of the cap instead of pooling inside. Drying takes 2-4 hours at room temperature. Do not reassemble the keyboard with damp keycaps because moisture will reach the PCB through the switch stem opening.
Cleaning the plate and switches
Use the vacuum with the brush attachment across the entire plate surface. Move slowly and let the brush dislodge debris stuck between switches. Debris lodged under the switch housing cannot be reached without desoldering or removing the switch entirely, but cleaning what is accessible prevents it from falling into switches when you press keys later.
Dampen a microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol. The cloth should be damp, not wet enough to drip. Wipe the top of each switch housing, the plate around the switches, and any exposed PCB areas. Alcohol evaporates quickly, but wait 5-10 minutes before reinstalling keycaps to ensure no moisture remains.
For switches with visible debris inside the housing, press the switch several times while the alcohol is still damp on the housing exterior. This works a small amount of alcohol into the switch through the gaps around the stem and can free stuck particles. It does not replace opening the switch if something is genuinely stuck inside.
What about the case and cable
Wipe the outside of the case with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol or water. Avoid getting moisture into any openings, including the USB port and screw holes.
The cable does not need cleaning unless there is visible residue. If cleaning the cable, dampen a cloth and wipe along the length while the cable is unplugged. Do not submerge cables or get the connectors wet.
Reinstalling keycaps in the correct positions
Reference your photograph. Start with unique keys that only fit one location, like the spacebar, enter, and shift keys. This anchors the layout.
Install the remaining keys row by row. Each row on a standard keyboard uses a different keycap profile angle. Row 1 is the number row, row 2 is QWERTY, row 3 is ASDF, and row 4 is ZXCV. Installing a row 3 keycap in row 2 will feel wrong when typing because the angle is different.
Press each keycap straight down onto the switch stem until you feel and hear it click into place. A keycap that sits higher than its neighbors is not fully seated. Remove it and press again, checking that the stem inside the keycap is aligned with the switch stem cross shape.
For stabilized keys, align the keycap posts with the stabilizer bar first, then press the center stem onto the switch. Pressing the switch side first makes it nearly impossible to get the stabilizer posts to clip in without removing the cap and starting over.
How often to deep-clean your keyboard
Deep-clean every 3-6 months if you type for most of the workday. Keyboards used in environments with more airborne dust or near food need cleaning more frequently. Waiting longer than six months lets oil and debris build up enough to affect key feel and sound.

When something goes wrong
A keycap cracked during removal
Replacement keycaps are sold individually and in sets. Identify your keyboard's layout and keycap profile before ordering. A keycap from a different profile set will fit on the switch but the angle and height will not match the surrounding keys.
A stabilizer bar came off
Stabilizer bars clip into plastic housings on either side of the switch. Pull the keycap off completely, then press the ends of the bar back into the clips. The bar should snap into place. If the bar will not stay, the clip may be broken and the stabilizer housing needs replacement.
The keyboard does not work after reassembly
Check that the cable is fully seated in both the keyboard and the computer. If the cable connection is secure, remove all keycaps and check for a keycap stem or debris bridging two switches and creating an unintended connection. Water damage from reassembling with wet keycaps can cause non-responsive keys, but this usually appears hours after reassembly, not immediately.
Keys feel scratchy after cleaning
Alcohol can remove factory lubricant from the switch stem if too much was used or if it was worked into the switch aggressively. The scratch will lessen slightly with use as the plastic surfaces polish each other, but the feel will not return to original without opening and re-lubricating the switches.

Can I clean a mechanical keyboard without removing the keycaps
You can wipe the keycap tops and vacuum between keys without removing caps, but this does not clean the sides of the keycaps or the plate under them. Oil from your fingers migrates down the sides of keycaps and builds up where the cap meets the switch. Surface cleaning removes visible dust but not the residue that affects how the keyboard feels to type on.
Is it safe to rinse keycaps under water
Keycaps are plastic with no electronics and can be washed in water. The switches and PCB cannot get wet, so remove all keycaps completely before introducing any liquid. Letting keycaps air-dry completely before reinstalling them prevents water from dripping into the switches during reassembly.
What is the difference between 70% and 99% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning
