You'll spend eight or nine hours a day at this desk. It needs to fit your body, hold your monitors at the right height, and not wreck your neck by the end of the week.

Three types of desk show up in developer home offices, each solving a different problem:

Standing desks let you work on your feet, which helps if sitting all day leaves your lower back stiff. Most are adjustable — you can drop them back down when standing gets old, usually around hour two. The height range matters more than the mechanism.
Adjustable desks fix the gap between your chair height and your monitor height. If your neck tilts up or down all day, you'll feel it. A desk that moves solves this faster than stacking books under a monitor.
L-shaped desks give you room to spread out: one surface for the keyboard and main monitor, another for references, a notebook, or a second machine. Corner placement saves floor space. You'll want one if you run out of desk by noon most days.

Pick based on what actually bothers you. A standing desk won't fix a monitor that sits too low, and an L-shaped desk won't help if you never use the extra surface. Measure your chair height, measure your eye level, then buy a desk that adjusts to meet them. Set it up properly once you get it — the desk itself is maybe thirty per cent of the fix. The rest is standing up every hour.
