How far away that monitor should be

Two things fight each other: sit close enough and you see pixels, sit far enough back and you are squinting. This finds the gap between them.

At this size and resolution you would need to sit about 32 in back before the pixel grid disappears, which is further than most desks allow. Expect visible pixel edges on text. More resolution fixes this; a bigger screen makes it worse.

Why there are two limits and not one number

The near limit is sharpness. Below about one arcminute per pixel your eye resolves the grid itself, and text edges start looking chewed. The far limit is field of view — once the screen fills less than about thirty degrees of your vision you start leaning in, which undoes every other thing you did to sit properly.

Why a bigger screen is not automatically better

Size and resolution have to move together. A 32-inch panel at 1080p spreads the same pixels over more glass, so each one gets bigger and more visible. The same 32 inches at 4K has more pixel density than a 27-inch 1440p, and you can sit closer to it.

What scaling has to do with it

Pixel density decides how big the interface is, and scaling puts it back. Around 110 PPI is what desktop interfaces were drawn for, so that runs unscaled. Double that and you want 200%, or everything is half-size. Get this wrong and you compensate by sitting closer, which is how a good monitor still ends up giving you neck pain.
