Budget, needs and how long you actually sit matter more than following a list, but here are three price brackets with one solid option in each:

• Budget: The AmazonBasics Mid-Back Office Chair costs less than most and includes adjustable lumbar support and armrests. It sits on a metal base rated to 250 pounds, which is more durable than you'll find at this price. Not exciting, but it works.

Buying the chair is not the end of it. An expensive chair you never adjust is just an expensive problem.

A few things that actually matter:

• Take breaks and stretch regularly to reduce fatigue.
