Eye fatigue isn't the cost of doing the work. There are straightforward ways to prevent it, and none of them require buying anything yet. Here are five that matter.
1. Monitor Position and Setup
Distance, angle and height all affect how hard your eyes work. Get them right and you'll finish the day with clear vision instead of a headache.
Position the top of your screen at or slightly below eye level when you sit up straight. Look down at your work by about ten or fifteen degrees. Straight ahead or up tires your eyes faster.
An arm's length is the standard distance. You should read text comfortably without leaning forward or squinting.
Dual or triple monitor setups need more attention. Keep your primary monitor directly in front of you at eye level. The secondary monitor goes immediately next to it, not off to the side where you have to turn your head. Angle both screens so they form a slight arc toward you. Done right, you shift your gaze between them. No head rotation.

- Figure Eight: Picture a giant figure eight about ten feet out. Trace it with your eyes, head still, moving slowly. Do it a few times, then reverse direction. Smooth tracking, not jerky jumps.
- Blinking: Blink hard and fast for a few seconds. Sounds trivial. Works anyway. You blink less when you are reading code, so your eyes dry out. Deliberate blinking spreads the tear film back over the surface.
The 20-20-20 Rule: Every twenty minutes, look at something at least twenty feet away for twenty seconds. That is the rule. It gives your focusing muscles a break from holding at close range, which is where most of the strain comes from. Set a timer if you forget.
