Cabin Mode
Wool, warm wood and a lamp you want to sit under.
Cabin Mode optimises for wanting to be in the room. Wool, warm wood, layered lamps rather than one ceiling light, and rugs to kill the hard echo that makes a home office sound like a call centre. It is the most forgiving vibe to build in stages.
Start here
- 1 Two or three warm lamps, not one ceiling light
- 2 A rug to kill the echo
- 3 A fabric or wool chair

Questions people ask
- Why does a home office sound bad on calls?
- Hard parallel surfaces — bare walls, a wooden floor, a glass desk — reflect sound back and forth, which a microphone picks up as a hollow echo. Soft furnishings absorb those reflections, which is why a rug and curtains usually do more for call quality than a better microphone.
- How warm should the light be for evening work?
- Below about 3000K reads as warm and comfortable in the evening. The trade-off is that warm, dim light in the morning does little to signal wakefulness, so a setup that works year-round usually needs either tuneable bulbs or two separate fixtures.
