Can a laptop ever be ergonomic on its own?
No. The screen and keyboard are fixed together, so either the screen is too low or the keyboard is too high — you cannot fix both at once. A stand plus a separate keyboard is the minimum viable portable setup, and it is the single highest-value change for anyone working off a laptop full time.
What matters most when working from unfamiliar spaces?
Screen height and noise, in that order. A folding stand solves the first anywhere. The second is usually a headphone problem rather than a room problem, since you rarely control the room you are sitting in.
